Look at the Picture Carefully: Begin by observing the image provided. Ask your child, “What is this a picture of?” It’s important that they can correctly identify the object before determining its beginning sound. For example, if the picture is of a cat, ensure the child says “cat.”
Say the Word Out Loud: Encourage the child to say the word slowly and clearly. Emphasize the first sound. For example, say “cat” and stretch out the beginning: “c-c-c-cat.” This helps them isolate the initial sound.
Identify the Beginning Sound: Ask, “What sound do you hear at the beginning of ‘cat’?” Guide them to identify the /k/ sound. Then ask, “Which letter makes that sound?” The answer is “C.”
Circle the Correct Letter: Beneath or beside each picture, there will be a selection of letters. Have the child circle the letter that matches the beginning sound. In our example, they would circle “C.”
Check and Discuss Answers: After completing all the pictures, go back and review the answers together. Praise correct responses and gently correct any mistakes by repeating the word and emphasizing the initial sound again.
